Rereading The Walking Dead Arch 2!

Hands down the single best panel among many in The Walking Dead issues 7-12:

So much emotion and desperation.  In one page everything changes and their priorities shift.  Another testament to the fabulous writing and art in this series.

Enjoy,

The Walking Dead - Rereading Awesomeness

The Walking Dead in my opinion is the best zombie comic ever created.  There are many reason why but I wont go into them all right now.  In preparation for The Walking Dead season 5 like many others I re-watched season 4 just to refresh my mind before diving into the new season.  In doing so I built up this overwhelming desire to reread the comics because they are just so good!

After reading the 1st arch again one of the things to stuck out the most to me was the art.  Tony Moore just kills it and even in black and white creates some of the most fantastic and memorable panels in modern comics.  So I thought I'd share with you some of my favorites from that first story arch that spawned the huge success that is The Walking Dead.

Amazing right?  If these don't get you syked to read this series for the first time or the forth time I don't know what will.  Now go and READ.

Thanks about leaving work to finish reading the next arch,
~Steve

Game of Thrones Redrawn for the 90's

I love to see artists recreate characters for different time periods or universes and Mike Robel does an awesome job of remaking the cast of Game of Thrones for the 80's and 90's.  Here are my favorites:

These were the best recreations in my opinion.  Bron would totally be a mafia thug only wearing jump suits! Jaime is spot on dirt bag Miami Vice wanna be!

Check out the rest on Buzzfeed

Enjoy,

Comics and Game of Thrones Unite!

Awesome page over at CBR today.  Some of their blog sketch artists have done some mash ups of comic book characters as Game of Thrones characters!  Some of these are really good check them out:

Spectacular Spider-Man #89 - Black Cat's Powers

Unfortunately, I wasn't around for the creation of many of my favorite super heroes, which means that I have an endless pile of back issues constantly awaiting my reading attention.  So, recently I've been reading a lot of Marvel circa early 1980's which brings us to today's reading of Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-Man #89, an instant classic portraying just how Black Cat gained her "super powers".

It's funny to me because I know exactly how Black Cat got her powers, even though I'd never read this issue before and do you know why?  The Spider-Man cartoons from the '90's!  I loved that cartoon and I've seen every episode many times over and the story arch of when Kingpins gives Black Cat her powers is one of the more memorable arcs.  But really only the fact that the Kingpin is the one that gives her those powers is actually the same!  In the comic the Black Cat seeks out her powers in order to be able to fight side by side with her love Spider-Man but in the cartoon they are forced upon her as an experiment to recreate the super soldier serum that created Captain America.

Which is my favorite version?  While most geeks would insist the comic version is the ruler of all, I actually like both of these versions of the story equally.  Of course the cartoon version wouldn't work in the comic continuity but it doesn't have to, which makes it great standing all on it's own!  You can read some more about the cartoon on the Black Cat Wiki.

Fully planning on re-watching these Spider-man episodes,
~Steve

Torrents - I Made Some!

I love torrents.  There I said it.  I'm a bastard and I know it but after enjoying other peoples time and effort for so long I decided to time to contribute to a community of total strangers.

http://thepiratebay.org/user/GeekShop

My first torrents?  No, it's not comics like you'd think because I really am trying to support that industry financially.  It's CARTOONS!  I hate most of the crap on TV with a few exceptions but I love cartoons and it took me a while to find these so I figured I'd share the love.

I haven't watched all of the episodes yet but the Legion is awesome so the only part of this that I can see being bad is Bubble Boy.  Bubble Boy sucks.

Enjoy,
~Steve

Game Of Thrones - The Dothraki Language

Steven V
This is pretty interesting and following a fantasy/sci-fi tradition many would associate with JRR Tolkien and the languages he created for his Lord of the Ring series. The stories and culture mixed in to the writing of the Game of Thrones books is amazing and I love that they're adding to the depth of the people therein. Also, with the exception of code created for military purposes, I had no idea that newly created languages have been tried to be legitimately added to society in such recent history; I'm definitely going to have to read more about them.

www.nytimes.com
Hollywood is driving demand for constructed languages, complete with grammatical rules, a written alphabet (hieroglyphics are acceptable) and enough vocabulary for basic conversations.

Punisher TV Series - Please be Good!

If you've seen one "cop" show on TV you've seen them all.  So, the question is: will a cop show with the Punisher be any different?

I really REALLY want to say, "YES!" but my gut says, "I doubt it".  If the article comments are anything to judge by this will be an enormous failure and a spit in the face of every Punisher writer and the work they've done on the character, since his first appearance in Amazing Spider-Man #129 in 1974.

Being the glass is half full kinda guy that I am, I'm going to watch this and pray that they work magik on it.  Even though the premise of the Punisher being an active police officer doesn't work in the Marvel Universe doesn't mean it can't work on TV.  Right?

Check out the article here: Punisher TV Series

Also, since we're on the subject, the Punisher has always been kinda hit and miss for me but my all time favorite Punisher issue is Punisher War Journal #12 during the World War Hulk event written by Matt Fraction and drawn by Ariel Olivetti.  Ok so the Punisher can take out gangs and drug lords but what's he going to do again'st an alien invastion?  Kick their ass is what!  GREAT issue.

Waiting for my Frank Castle casting call,
~Steve

Around the Net – Slate.com TV Club - Mad Men Season 3

This weeks Mad Men was really good but there were a few parts of the episode that left me with more questions that answers, so, I went looking for answers and found an awesome TV club on Slate.com that discusses each weeks episode!

It’s three different people that write articles, sometimes back and forth to each other, about their views on the episodes; the goods the bads and some of the more intricate plot line details.  Check it out @ Mad Men TV Club on Slate.com

Anyways, I got to reading one of the articles for this week and just had to leave a comment so I thought I’d share it here too.  Here is the part I was responding to:

But one question we haven't covered is this: Why, in a show that's chockablock with characters we'd like to spend more time with—Joan, Ken, Roger, even Moneypenny—do we keep getting introduced to new ones? Don has now had two mysterious male-bonding sessions over makeshift cocktails—the first with Conrad Hilton, the second with Warden Den—and although both have deepened our understanding of Don's mental state, neither has added much in the way of plot. READ MORE

And here are my thoughts on the subject:

I think that Don's "mysterious male-bonding sessions" are a perfect compliment to his character. Throughout the series Don has all of two lasting relationships with people outside of Sterling Cooper; his wife and the gal from his previous life (can't remember her name, she has the bad leg). So, I think that it is very fitting that they have introduced new short term characters, like Dennis Hobart, to have these revealing moments with Don.

He has always been so guarded about his life, past and present, and yet he has these moments with complete strangers where he is opening up and revealing parts of his past and childhood (at the bar during the wedding) as well as his thoughts and feelings about being a man and dad. I think he does this because to him these people are nobody, people that he has just met that happen to be there when he chooses to reach out to someone (which is becoming more frequent); and that he probably will never see again. So, because there is no danger or commitment in the act of opening up to strangers he does it freely and probably feels better in doing so (for instance the moment of happiness after the bar scene when he drops their things and kisses Betty after the wedding) but then faces no repercussions in his life by letting someone in, no matter how short term.

Thinking about taking up smoking because Don looks so suave doing it,
